Summary of CCD Developments since 2001

Since 2001 CCD has:

Under a grant from the State Department, played the lead U.S. role in organizing the 2002 Seoul Non-Governmental Forum of the Community of Democracies;
At the inception of the Bush Administration and since then, joined with other NGOs to ensure the engagement of the White House and Department of State in the CD process;
Participated in efforts to win support of civil society and governments in establishing a caucus of democratic nations at the United Nations;
Played the lead role, as recommended by the Seoul CD Conference, in building a network of NGOs working with governments and multilateral institutions to foster democracy education around the world;
Held a conference at the Rockefeller Pocantico estate attended by members of that network that produced a Global Strategic Plan on Democracy Education;
Assisted through consultations with leading academics and democracy practitioners in Washington in developing the Democracy Project at Bennington College, focusing all social science and humanities disciplines on a core “democracy” curriculum;
Advised the Romanian organizers of the November 2003 Regional CD Conference in Bucharest for East and Central Europe; CCD chaired the concluding panel;
Initiated a join effort to develop a European Network supportive of the CD;
Actively assisted in developing and executing an operational plan for the 2005 Santiago CD Conference;
Fostered a public dialogue on how governments, civil society and business can eliminate the world’s remaining dictators through peaceful means and promote and preserve democracy worldwide.
