Andrew E. Rice

Andrew E. Rice has been actively involved in international organization and international development activities for more than 50 years. A political scientist, with an undergraduate degree from Harvard College and a Ph.D. from Syracuse University, he has worked in the Congress, the State Department and the White House, and has taught as an Adjunct Professor at the American University School of International Service.

In 1957 he helped form the Society for International Development, a worldwide professional association and later served for nearly 20 years as its chief executive officer. During the 1950's he also helped organize the International Development Conference, a cooperative of  U.S. non-governmental organizations, of which he later served as President and Chair.

Rice is Past President of the United Nations Association of the National Capital Area. He is a former member of the National Council of the UNA-USA, and served as chair of the Planning Committee for the UNA-USA National Forum on the United States and the United Nations in Washington in June 2003. In recent years, he has been Secretary and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Worldwatch Institute, Co-Chair of the Alliance for United Nations Sustainable Development Programs, and a member of the governing body of the Union of International Associations (Brussels).
