Invited to be Member of US Commission for UNESCO
United
States Secretary of State Colin Powell has contact Robert
LaGamma, Executive Director of the Council for a Community
of Democracies, and asked the organization to serve on the
United States National Commission for the United Nations Educational,
Scientific, and Cultural Organization as a representative
of nongovernmental organizations. The UNESCO Commission will
provide the United States Government with advice concerning
US interests in educational, scientific,cultural and communications
issues, as well as assisting in the implementation of UNESCO
programs in the US.

Dear Mr. LaGamma:
It is
with great pleasure that I hereby appoint the Council for
a Community of Democracies to serve on the United States National
Commission for the United Nations Educational, Scientific,
and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a representative of
nongovernmental organizations. The National Commission will
provide the U.S. Government, through the U.S. Department of
State, with expert advice on U.S. interests in educational,
scientific, cultural and communications issues at UNESCO and
assist with the implementation of UNESCO programs in the United
States. I am confident that the Council for a Community of
Democracies will contribute significantly to the value of
the Commission’s work.
As required by
U.S. law, the initial terms of members of the National Commission
will be for either one, two, or three years, and are renewable
for an additional three-year period. The length of your initial
term will be determined in a random selection process to be
carried out once all commission members have been appointed.

you with further details concerning the operation of the Commission.
