Bomb Suspects Hid in Liberia
This
article details the recent evidence that Liberia’s
former dictator, Charles Taylor, harbored Al-Qaida members
and served as a middleman for the terrorist group by allowing
them to trade cash for traceless blood diamonds. Dictators
and their actions are not just a domestic threat, but also
a threat to democracy and by extension, global security. In
signing the Warsaw Declaration in 2000, the CD member countries
agreed to emphasize “the interdependence between peace…and
democracy”. The CD has resolved to “strengthen
cooperation to face the transnational challenges to democracy,
such as state-sponsored, cross-border and other forms of terrorism;
organized crime; {and} corruption…” As an alliance
of Democracies, CD works to prevent such threats to the international
community through the promotion of stable democracy around
the globe.
