An Alliance of Democracies

In the January 27, 2005 piece in the Washington Times, Sylvain Charat proposes a new international alliance of democracies built on the principle of “democratic discrimination.” The new body would be “committed to the spreading of the ideas of freedom, free trade and the development of free and open societies worldwide,” helping to “ensure our [collective] security.” In support of this argument, Charat makes the point that, not long ago, the U.N. Commission for Human Rights was chaired by Libya. “The United Nations” in its present form may well be “unfit to face the challenge of terrorism” – something the new alliance of democracies may, Charat suggests, be ready to take on.
