Democracy Convention in India Gathers 1,000 Women

On January 30 and 31, the Association of Local Governance of India (ALGI) organized a two day convention of woman panchayat leaders in partnership with the Institute of Social Sciences (India). The convention titled “Vaishali Gantantra Yatra” was held in Vaishali, Bihar, the birthplace of democracy in India. Nearly 1,000 women marched to the city of Vaishali with the slogan: “Strengthen Grassroots Democracy.” The program also celebrated women’s achievements in public life.

A host of speakers, including national political leaders and social activists, addressed the attendees in several speeches that dealt with government corruption, good governance and women empowerment issues.
