In collaboration with the American University Center for Democracy and Election Management, the Center for the Study of Islam and Democracy (CSID), and the International Centre for Democratic Transition (ICDT- Budapest), the Council for a Community of Democracies organized a conference at the American University on March 9 on "Transitions to Democracy in the Middle East and North Africa: Lessons from Other Regions." This conference will serve the purpose of preparing the agenda for a major three day conference in September 2007. As such, it is intended to lay the framework, asking such questions as, "What are the barriers to Democracy in the Middle East?" and what can be learned from transitions in Europe and Africa. The September conference will address and go into greater depth on the topics covered at AU.
The transcript of the March 9th conference has been completed and is available below. This transcript will assist CCD in formulating the agenda for a three day conference on the same topic in Budapest. Check back here to stay up to date with CCD’s “Transitions to Democracy in the Middle East and North Africa: Lessons from Other Regions” project. As more details become available about the September conference they will be reported here. This includes the agenda, specific dates, participants and location.
