U.S. Touts Commitment to Democracy in the Baltic Region

USINFO: Baltic Nations Promote Democracy, National Security Advisor Says

Following President Bush’s trip to the Baltic region National Security Advisor Steve Hadley has called the countries “powerful allies dedicated to democracy and freedom.”  Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice credited the democratic commitment of the Baltic countries to the expansion of NATO, referring to it as “the fruits of that effort over the last decade.” 

The report also refers to the engagement of the Baltic states with “…Europe’s emerging and struggling democracies…”  Hadley also refers to the Baltic troop levels in Afghanistan and Iraq calling it their “feeling an obligation to help others find their freedom.”

Following the trip U.S. officials indicated that the Baltic leadership had a “deep-felt moral commitment to promoting democracy…”
