Politicians in Bangladesh Arrested in Anti-Corruption Drive

Reuters reports on May 30 that Bangladesh has arrested around a dozen prominent politicians and businessmen on corruption charges, in what the government calls an effort to prepare the country for new elections.  An election that was originally planned for this past January was delayed by the interim government backed by the Bangladeshi military.  They have pledged to hold the election by the end of 2008, but only after they reform the political system and purge the country of corruption.

The U.S. Department of State issued a statement on May 30 indicating that it could support these actions as long as they are conducted within the rule of law:

“Combating corruption is a long-standing priority for the United States Government. We want to see anti-corruption and anti-crime efforts carried out in a manner that is fair and impartial to political interests. We have said consistently that the anti-corruption campaign must be conducted in accordance with the rule of law and international standards of human rights. Anyone detained should be charged or released, receive full due process in accordance with Bangladeshi law and international standards, and have access to a lawyer.

We believe that a timetable outlining the steps needed to create the conditions necessary for free, fair, non-violent, and transparent elections restoring fully democratic, civilian government should be announced as soon as possible. We want to see Bangladeshi officials and political leaders make decisions and take actions based on what best promotes stability, political reform, and a return to an elected, democratic government.”

However, the Associated Press reports that the detainees are being held under emergency laws which “allow for arrest or detention without warrants or specific charges while allegations against them are investigated.”  The interim government has now arrested more than 170 current and former officials since taking control in January.
