Democracy Falls on Barren Ground

The departure of President Askar Akayez of Kyrgyzstan is being called a success for democracy. In fact, association of the departure of Akayez has been speculated in the same breath as the Georgia’s Rose Revolution in 2003, and even the Orange Revolution that brought Viktor Yushchenko to the presidency of the Ukraine. Kyrgyzstan is not being reshaped by another revolution as the author Elinor Burkett states. “The conflicts in Central Asia are more economic and regional than political and more likely to be worsened than relieved by the current instability”. The beacon of hope that lighted up the Ukraine in December is not present in Kyrgyzstan. A friend of the author, whom Burkett quoted said it best: “This is not a democracy. This is just a crowd.”
