European Foundation for Democracy through Partnership Launched in Brussels

The establishment of the European Foundation for Democracy through Partnership (EFDP), an “independent European foundation that aims to contribute to the advancement and strengthening of democracy outside the European Union (EU), and to complement existing EU democracy assistance programmes,” was announced on April 15.  EFDP board co-chair Roel von Meijenfeldt, also Executive Director of the Netherlands Institute for Multi-Party Democracy, said of the Brussels-based Foundation’s approach, “The foundation will cooperate with EU institutions, but retain an arm’s-length approach to preserve flexibility where the EU encounters diplomatic constraints.”
