Egypt's Test for Mr. Bush
Editorial in the Washington Post, February 1, 2005

President Bush’s inaugural address highlighted America’s support of democratic reformers facing repression throughout the world. The president’s remarks to stand by democratic reformers will be tested with the jailing of Ayman Nour, a young leader of a new opposition party calling for a liberal democracy in Egypt. The jailing of opposition leader gives the Bush administration the opportunity to bring the president’s remarks to fruition. The State Department has already deplored his arrest, and U.S. officials have already begun to look into the matter. The jailing of Ayman Nour gives the administration an opportunity to validate President Bush’s commitment to democratic reformers throughout the world.
