U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice Urges Pacific Island Leaders to “Embrace Democracy”

The International Herald Tribune reports that U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice spoke in front of “leaders from among more than 20 Pacific stats and regions,” calling on the countries of the region to “continue opposing a military coup in Fiji and to embrace democracy.” Secretary Rice urged the region not to “devolve into an area where strong men unilaterally decide the fates of their country and establish democratic foundations of their neighbors.” According to the report, State Department officials were at the Pacific Islands conference to “expand political, economic and cultural ties in the region.”
