Mr. Fox's Decision

Washington Post, April 29th, 2005, Editorial

The April 29th, 2005, Washington Post editorializes on the Mexican Presidential election to be held next year. President Vicente Fox, who broke the Institutional Revolutionary Party’s decades-old grip on power five years ago with his election victory, is celebrated by the Post for his “courageous commitment that the election of his successor next year will also be free and fair.” To this effect, Mr. Fox announced that he would remove his attorney general and reassess the government’s controversial prosecution of Mexico City Mayor and Presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. The Post notes that, while Mr. Lopez Obrador may not be the best candidate for Mexico, it is important – as President Fox said – that the government “will not obstruct anyone from participating in the coming federal election.”
