According to ABC News U.S. Senator and Republican Presidential candidate John McCain is calling for a global “League of Democracies” as a larger plan of international cooperation he will pursue if elected president.  Senator McCain says the United States must revive the “democratic solidarity” with its allies abroad.  His vision of the League of Democracies is that it will create a “core international order of peace based on freedom,” that could “act where the U.N. fails to act.”  In his speech at Stanford University, Senator McCain argued that the battle “between liberty and despotism” did not end with the Cold War, but rather “took on new guises.”  McCain went on to say “we must expand the power and reach of democracy, freedom and human rights using our many strengths as free people,” adding that it should not be a partisan issue in the United States.
