Critic Says McCain's "League of Democracies" is "Doomed to Fail," Says to Strengthen Existing Community of Democracies

In a response to Senator McCain's call for a "League of Democracies" on the Washington Note, Scott Paul said McCain’s League of Democracies “is doomed to fail for a number of obvious reasons,” and that the Senator had “bitten off more than he can chew…” Paul says the League of Democracies would be seen as another American tool that would continue the policies of the Bush administration of “splitting democratic coalitions.” He argues the League of Democracies would not have the legitimacy of the United Nations, and would further entrench the rift between the world’s democracies and non-democracies. Instead Paul argues that more attention should be focused on “consolidating the U.N. Democracy Caucus,” and strengthening the Community of Democracies and United Nations, rather than creating another tool to further American unilateralism.
