On October 27, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution that calls on the government of Iran to allow Dr. Ahmed Shaheed, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights, to investigate human rights abuses in the country. Additionally, the resolution calls on the government of Iran to allow Dr. Shaheed to carry out his investigation without government interference and for the release all arbitrarily detained political prisoners.

Sponsored by the Canadian government and forty-one other states, the resolution marks the highest vote count since 1992, demonstrating the increasing international awareness of Iran’s deplorable human rights record. The final figures from the UNGA vote were 86 countries in favor, 32 against, and 59 abstentions.
