Op/Ed Calls for “Coalition of Democracies” to Promote UN Reform

Former senate majority leader George Mitchell, in an October 11 Op/Ed in the International Herald Tribune, was very critical of what he called the “lack of the progress toward UN reform.”  Despite this critical perspective on the reform process up to date, Mitchell argued that UN reform is not without hope.  Opponents of reform, according to Mitchell, are “nondemocracies.”  He calls for concerted action between the United States and other democracies in order to make sure that the reform process is successful.  The CCD along with others has called on the Community of Democracies through the UN Democracy Caucus to take on a role similar to what Mitchell describes.  Mitchell’s piece, “Don’t Write off UN Reform”, can be found online at: http://www.iht.com/articles/2005/10/11/opinion/edmitchell.php
