Netherlands Makes Further Contribution to DRC Transition to Democracy
September 7, 2006, United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC)

On September 7 the Netherlands pledged 300,000 euros to the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC), matching their previous contribution from last December.  The funding will assist MONUC’s operational ability in unison with the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC) to with remnants of armed opposition in eastern Congo.

The contributions from the Netherlands are designed to “support the process of re-establishing state authority in the DRC”, according to the Netherlands Deputy Ambassador to the DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo).  The DRC has been hampered by armed resistance groups responsible for attacks on citizens and the countries natural resources.

Special Representative to the Secretary General in the DRC, William Swing, has accredited the Netherlands with being “one of the first donors in the DRC transition to democracy”, which has invited further international aid.
