A Network of Democrats in the Arab World

The Center for the Study of Islam and Democracy (CSID), Partners for Democratic Change (PDC), and members of the civil society from the Arab world, have coordinated to form the Network of Democrats in the Arab World (NDAW).

CSID states that the goals of this project are as follows:

Build a unified platform for democrats to provide a moderate,
progressive, and hopeful vision for the future and to defeat the voices of extremism and radicalism,
Establish communication links and regular meetings between democrats in the various Arab countries so that they may share knowledge, experience, and expertise among each other and with democrats from other countries,
Hone the members abilities and skills in communications, leadership, and coalition building and provide them with the skills set required to spread the message of democracy, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence,
Create a support network to the members in case of harassment and/or persecution,
Develop a strategy to sustain and expand the network over many years through membership fees, grants, donations, services, and
publications.

The project began on December 2005 and thus far has adopted a charter and established a list serve to facilitate communication between the members of the Network and CSID. CSID has also strengthened ties with leading international human rights NGOs and Arab embassies to help aid NDAW members in case of harassment.

CSID and PDC organized regional workshops designed to “develop the new members in communication, effective meeting facilitation, leadership, and project development skills.” They also ran trainings to examine the interaction between Islam and democracy.
