Civic Education Conference to be held at the Pocantico Conference Center
June 8-10, 2003

The Community of Democracies meeting in Seoul, Korea last November, both at its Ministerial gathering and its Non-Governmental Forum, placed great emphasis on democracy education as a means of consolidating democratic gains around the world. Specifically, the Forum urged the holding of a global planning conference to chart a course of action. To implement the Forum’s principal recommendation, the Council for a Community of Democracies will hold a Global Strategic Planning Conference on Democracy Education, co-sponsored by the American Forum for Global Education. The Conference’s objective is to produce a strategic plan from the dialogue between educators, representatives of civil society, governments and international organizations. The plan will seek to assist policymakers better coordinate and aggressively expand their initiatives to foster civic education vital to emerging democracy in different cultures around the world. The conference will be held from June 8-10, 2003 and hosted by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund at its Pocantico Conference Center in Tarrytown, New York.
