Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice outlined the Bush administration’s goals for greater democracy overseas over the next four years. The pressing need for competitive elections this year in Egypt and women’s rights in Saudi Arabia are just a few challenges along the path toward realization of the administration’s goals. Eliminating extremism and promoting stability are important for the advent of democracy as Secretary Rice in an interview with the Washington Post, said. “Extremism, is rooted in the absence of other channels for political activity, and so when you know that the status quo is no longer defensible, then you have to be willing to move in another direction”. The goals for greater democracy has become more challenging for the Bush Administration, for example balancing the push for democracy as Vladimir Putin’s Russian regime becomes more authoritarian.
