Saudis take small dose of democracy

In June of 2004, the Saudi royal family began an "ambitious experiment" in democracy for their people. Under mounting pressure both externally, from the Bush administration, and internally, from increasingly violent Muslim militants, the government has found a potential resource to calm all forces involved: local elections. Undoubtedly, the hope of the government is to increase its legitimacy before the international community and its own people.
