On September 15, The Washington Times published an op-ed on the Community of Democracies, highlighting its conception, many achievements, and even making mention of their upcoming meeting on the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York. The article, authored jointly by U.S. Undersecretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs Paula Dobriansky; Portuguese Ambassador to the United States João de Vallera; and Lithuanian Ambassador to the United States Audrus Bruzga, praised the accomplishments of CD, commenting on the signing of the “Warsaw Declaration,” the launch of the International Centre for Democratic Transition in Hungary, Council for a Community of Democracies’ publication of the “Diplomat’s Handbook for Democracy Development Support,” and the establishment of a permanent secretariat in Warsaw. Emphasizing the importance of the Community of Democracies as an “established, proven coalition which…remains the most promising venue for achieving a world of global democratic solidarity,” the piece urged the readers to continue offering their strong support in order to “deepen democracy where it exists and to defend it where it is threatened.”
