Zimbabwe Cancels Licenses for All NGOs, Claims They are Fronts for Western Powers
17 April 2007 | Printer Friendly

According to Mail and Guardian, the Zimbabwean government has cancelled licenses for all NGOs in the country, claiming the move was necessary “in order to sift out those seeking to force regime change…”  The government says the crackdown is focused on “…Western organizations masquerading as relief agencies…” that are attempting to overthrow the regime of President Mugabe.  The report says that the Zimbabwean government has accused NGOs in the past as being fronts for “Western powers.”  The bill drafted by authorities will also allow “the state to demand records of finances and operations of NGOs.”
