Ambassador Jeremy Kinsman

Jeremy Kinsman was born and raised in Montreal, educated at Princeton University (1963) and the Institut d’ Etudes Politiques, Paris (1965), Jeremy Kinsman joined the Canadian Foreign Service in 1966.

In August 2006, he completed 14 years on posting as an Ambassador in Europe, having been Ambassador in Moscow (1992-96, accredited to several adjacent republics), in Rome as Ambassador to Italy and also Permanent Representative to the UN Food Agencies (1996-2000, also accredited to Malta and Albania), in London as Canadian High Commissioner (2000-2002, also accredited to The Commonwealth), and in Brussels as Ambassador to the European Union (2002-2006).

Earlier posts included having been Minister for Political Affairs in Washington and Minister and Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN in New York.

He has also held senior posts in the Foreign Affairs Department, notably as Chairman of Policy Planning, and later as Political Director.

In his new life as a commentator and analyst, he has appeared in recent months in the International Herald Tribune, the Toronto Globe and Mail, the Toronto Star, and Policy Options, in addition to his regular column on foreign affairs at cbc.ca/news.
